At 12 years old, Later, a large Golden Retriever was in his twilight years. Typical pet owners, we didn't see him "near his end," but just a little older now.

On Wednesday, October 1, 2014, He reached the end of his trail. The spark was gone from his eyes and it was an effort to get up and walk.

Yet, he was faithful and devoted and continued to hold on to what little was left and stay at our side.

On Friday, October 3, we spent the night on the living room floor, thinking he would not make it through the night. We lay beside him that night so he would not be alone when he departed. Yet again he chose to hold on and stay at our side.

On Saturday, October 4, 2014, we took Later to the vet who agreed, there was no quality left and he was giving up. We stayed and pet Later that day, while the vet let him go home to the Creator.

Some day, we will see him again at the Rainbow Bridge.

Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth
It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours

Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows,
hills, valleys with lush green grass

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this special place
There is always food and water and warm spring weather

The old and frail are young again
Those who are maimed are made whole again

They play all day with each other
There is only one thing missing

They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth
So each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !

The nose twitches !
The ears are up !
The eyes are staring !
And this one suddenly runs from the group !

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet,
you take him or her into your arms and embrace
your face is kissed again and again,
and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated

Fare well my friend.
Go now and run free
in the open meadows
amongst the Star Nation.

May the wing of
Brother Red Hawk
carry you swiftly home.

May you find joy running and playing
in the free places of the Creator,
running under the Mother Moon
like your brother Wolf.

Thank you for the joy and happiness
you gave us while you lived among us.
Thank you for the patience you taught us
and the companionship you gave so freely.

Thank you for the lessons of simplicity
and understanding of unconditional love.

Thank you for the lessons of compassion
and helping us understand giving and caring.

Go now and be happy and free,
and until we meet again,
fare well my friend.

A poem from Fox Valley Animal Referral Center:

Loving Memories

You no longer greet me
As I walk through the door.
You're not there to make me smile,
to make me laugh anymore.

Life seems quiet without you
You were far more than a pet,
You were a family member, a friend,
A loving soul I'll never forget.

You were such a great combanion,
Constant, loyal and true,
my life has been much richer,
Because I had a friend like you.
